第346期：square one

英语中有很多成语和习惯用语来自体育运动和各种游戏。今天我们来讲一个来自游戏的成语：square one，通常用法是back to square one.意思是：回到原点，从头开始。

“Back to square one” is a phrase that means “to go back to the beginning, after a dead-end or failure”.

例句：

I wanted to make a lot of money, so I saved up a lot, bought a business, and gambled all my money away. Now I’m back to square one.

我想赚很多钱，所以我就拼命存钱，买了一家公司，但都赌博输掉了。现在我又被打会原点了。

所以square one都意思就是the initial stage or starting point.

If you are back to square one, you have to start dealing with something from the beginning again because the way you were dealing with it has failed. 

开始我们说了，这个说法来自于一种游戏。关于来自哪种游戏，历来有很多说法。其中一种说法是来自一个叫做Four Square的游戏。Square是方格的意思，就是下图中写着“1”的那个方块。

这是一种美国小学里流行的一种游戏。

还有一种说法认为square one来自一个叫做Snakes and Ladders的游戏，也叫蛇梯游戏，类似飞行棋。

游戏靠掷骰子来移动自己的棋子，如果有人掷到了“回到原点-back to square one”，就得从头开始。跟我们玩的飞行棋一个原理。

另外，Square One是加拿大安大略最大的购物中心，也是加拿大第二大shopping center. 在Ontario的Mississauga.
